Goodman HVAC Service, Repair & Installation in Fremont

Goodman air conditioners, heat pumps and furnaces usually fail one part at a time. The letters on the outdoor unit's data plate tell us what you have, and that decides how the repair and any smart thermostat are handled.

Goodman systems in Fremont, Newark and Milpitas homes come in for ordinary reasons: a weak capacitor or a pitted contactor on a hot afternoon, a dirty flame sensor on the first cold night, a clogged condensate drain, or a refrigerant leak. Most of those parts are standard, so a lot of Goodman repairs are finished on the first visit. What is specific to Goodman is which series you have, whether the system uses ComfortBridge, and whether a compressor warranty still applies. You get the price before any work starts. We are an independent service company, not affiliated with Goodman.

Read the model prefix first

The data plate on the side of the outdoor unit starts with letters that tell you what sits in your side yard:

  • GSX — a split-system air conditioner, paired indoors with a gas furnace or an air handler.
  • GSXC — a higher-efficiency air conditioner built for ComfortBridge operation.
  • GSZ — a heat pump, which heats as well as cools, usually with an air handler indoors or a gas furnace as backup heat.

The furnace or air handler has its own label inside the front panel. Both labels together tell us which parts fit and which warranty terms apply.

ComfortBridge in plain terms

On ComfortBridge equipment the indoor and outdoor units exchange operating data and set capacity and airflow themselves, and the system keeps a record of faults that a technician can read. It is designed to run with a standard 24-volt thermostat, so you are not tied to one brand of wall control. For repairs this means two things: faults are read from the system before parts are changed, and a replacement control board has to match the system and be set up for it.

Smart thermostats on Goodman equipment

A smart thermostat works on most Goodman systems. When it does not, the cause is almost always wiring or settings:

  • Power. Most smart thermostats need a C (common) wire. Older thermostat cables may not have a spare conductor; a new cable or an adapter solves it.
  • Heat pump settings. On a GSZ system the thermostat must be set for a heat pump, with the reversing-valve setting (O or B) matching the equipment and backup heat set up. Get it wrong and the system cools when you ask for heat.
  • Stages. Two-stage furnaces and air conditioners need their stage wires connected; leaving one off changes how the equipment chooses between low and high.

Our smart home guides explain the options, and we install thermostats in Fremont, Newark and Milpitas.

The compressor warranty question

Some Goodman models were sold with a lifetime compressor limited warranty, and owners remember it the day the cooling stops. Before counting on it:

  • It applies only to qualifying models, under the terms written for that model; the install date and the installation records matter.
  • It covers the compressor itself. Labor, and usually refrigerant, are not part of it.
  • A failed capacitor or contactor keeps a healthy compressor from starting and looks exactly like a dead one, so we test before anyone talks about a claim.

What to have ready

  • Photos of the outdoor unit’s data plate and of the label inside the furnace or air handler door.
  • The thermostat model, and a photo of its wiring if it was changed recently.
  • The installation paperwork, if you have it.

Parts, workmanship and replacement

We use factory certified parts only. Replacement parts keep the manufacturer’s parts warranty, and our repair work carries a 90-day workmanship warranty. One failed part on a sound system is worth fixing; a failed compressor out of warranty or repeated breakdowns on an older system are when replacement deserves a look. New air conditioners, heat pumps and furnaces start with a free in-home estimate.

Local notes

Many Fremont and Newark homes are 1950s–1980s tract houses with the furnace in the garage or attic, ducts in the attic or crawlspace and the outdoor unit in a side yard. Hot afternoons from June to September are when weak capacitors and dirty coils give out; from November to March the calls move to furnaces. Local pages: Goodman in Fremont, Newark and Milpitas.

Common questions

What do GSX, GSXC and GSZ mean on my Goodman?

They are series codes at the start of the model number on the outdoor unit. GSX is an air conditioner, GSXC a higher-efficiency air conditioner built for ComfortBridge, and GSZ a heat pump that heats as well as cools.

Will a smart thermostat work with my Goodman system?

In most cases, yes. It needs a power (C) wire, the right heat pump settings on a GSZ system, and every stage the equipment has wired. ComfortBridge equipment is designed to work with a standard 24-volt thermostat.

Is my Goodman compressor covered for life?

Only some Goodman models carried a lifetime compressor limited warranty, under terms tied to the model and the installation. It covers the compressor itself, not labor. We test first, because many 'dead compressor' calls turn out to be a capacitor or contactor.

Can you replace just the outdoor unit?

Sometimes. The new outdoor unit has to match the indoor coil and use the same refrigerant type, so we check the furnace or air handler and its coil before quoting a partial replacement.
